My interview at The Business Insider

Earlier this week I was interviewed by Heather Leonard at The Business Insider about my company, Brain Candy, LLC, and its first internally produced entertainment property, Runes of Gallidon.

It was just one part of an amazing whirlwind trip to NYC where I was able to:

- have dinner with Ivan Askwith, Cheryl Furjanic, and Mica Scalin (we continued the Futures of Entertainment 4 conversations regarding transmedia, fan engagement, collaboration, etc.)

- meet and be interviewed by Heather Leonard at The Business Insider

- have coffee with Aina Abiodun and share some awesome ideas about new ways to create content

- stop by the Starlight Runner office and meet with Caitlin Burns and Erek Tinker (yet more thought-provoking discussions of transmedia storytelling and participatory engagement)

- and wrap it all up with a long-overdue dinner with Jen Simmons (a smart, talented woman with her own views on narrativity and technology)

all in less than 30 hours.

A non-stop trip of intellectual challenges and new insights. Mentally awesome, physically exhausting.

Happy to be home and ready to stay grounded through the holidays, though I’m already wondering when I can get back to the Big Apple…

NaNoWriMo 2009 (50,000 words + 30 days = 1 novel)

The formula is deceptively simple, and 1,667 words a day seems like a very reasonable target. What could possibly go wrong?

I’ll be able to answer that first-hand by December 1st after completing my first venture into NaNoWriMo.

My goal is to complete a novel set in Runes of Gallidon, as well as at least plot out (if not draft) a short story and a novella. Each work has a protagonist that will appear in the other works, but they will all stand as independent works of fiction.

I’ve never written a novel before, much less tried writing this many integrated stories before. But I’m not stupid. I know an undertaking of this magnitude requires preparation.

Writing application? Check: Liquid Story

Data file backup system? Check: MozyPro

On the go access to current files? Check: Jungle Drive

Multiple configured platforms for writing? Check. Home desktop, work desktop, laptop, netbook.

Voice recognition software that automatically corrects grammar mistakes, suggests dialogue edits, and orders coffee and crumpets wirelessly via Starbucks’ RFID ordering system? Ummmmm…

It’s 36 hours to insanity. Look for updates on my way to the crazy house.

Another Posting Siesta…and Comic-Con 2009

Posting will be light for the rest of the month – Brain Candy is busy gearing up for a Runes of Gallidon appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego in (gasp!) two weeks.

Let me know if you’re heading down. Kali Chung will be reprising her cosplay role of Ruena, a character from Runes of Gallidon, and she’ll be on the main floor most of Friday and Saturday.

I’ll also be at the convention with my two business partners, Tony and Andy, and we’ll be handing out 12-page sampler books filled with excerpts from fictional works, original art, and two pages from our first comic, Morgan. All the content, of course, is set in the Runes of Gallidon world.

If you can’t make Comic-Con, please continue to check out the Gallidon website. New content gets posted each week!

Making of Gallidon, Part 8 – Yours, Mine, Ours

While the overriding driver for the Brain Candy team to start Runes of Gallidon was a passion for the concept of building a shared world collaboratively, we also acknowledged that at some point we would have to figure out how we could share revenue with Artisans. Ah, the wonderfully tricky, sticky issues with money and creative efforts!

The success of Gallidon rests on the interest and participation of the creative community, so we aimed to structure revenue sharing in a way that would be attractive for Artisans.
